Chimney Smoke & Pressure Testing

Chimney & Flue Smoke & Pressure Testing, Why?…..

Firstly and most importantly the purpose of chimney and flue smoke testing is to establish if a chimney’s flue ways are of sound construction and that they are fit for safe use.

Secondly the smoke test allows us to check the chimney’s up draught / draw as it may be badly affected by a leak or breach between flues in the chimney system.

Thirdly, informed decisions can be made as to whether the flue should be re-lined for future safe use and which method of relining will be best.

A full Type 1 Chimney and Flue Smoke Test…

Is used to ascertain if there are any structural defects or cracks in the flue that will allow smoke and other dangerous gasses to reenter your home or that of any other adjacent property during normal operation. Any such gasses that can escape into the property because of breaches between flues or flue walls or due to inadequate chimney draw can potentially prove fatal as a result of Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

Journeyman Chimney Services are qualified and approved…

by the National Association of Chimney Sweeps to conduct chimney and flue smoke testing in accordance with HETAS guidelines and Document J of the Building Regulations and issue the NACS Certificate of Chimney and Flue Smoke Testing for all solid fuel flues and chimney systems.

It is a NACS requirement to sweep the flue-way prior to conducting a full smoke test to remove any soot, creosote, tar or loose parging that may otherwise block existing cracks and leaks that would lead to unreliable test results. Journeyman will always sweep the flue as part of this process. It is also a NACS requirement to check all properties adjoining the chimney system to check for smoke leaks. Journeyman will of course organise this as part of the test.
